Budgeting for a New Roof: A Beginner’s Guide

In Florida, our roofs go through a lot of wear and tear. From the summer heat to hurricanes, our roofs tend to have a shorter lifespan than the rest of the country. Every 20-30 years, you’ll want to consider replacing your roof.

This can be a daunting task. There are so many factors to consider, and you may be unsure how to be financially prepared for the expenses. Today, we’ll go over how to budget for a new roof and what could affect the price!

Average Roof Replacement Cost

Before you can start budgeting for a new roof, you’ll have to know about what you’re looking at price-wise. Unfortunately, there won’t be a one-size-fits-all answer to the price of a new roof.

Two main things are going to affect the price of your new roof: square footage and materials. The more square footage you need to cover, the more the project will cost, and certain materials can raise or lower the cost which we’ll discuss more later. Because of these different factors, the average range for roof replacements is from $6,700 to $80,000; however, the national average cost for most houses is around $11,000.

Get an Estimate

The best way to determine just how much a roof replacement will cost is to get an estimate. A professional roofer can more accurately give you a replacement estimate, so you can plan your budget around it. If you want to get the best idea of what you’re looking at, get several estimates and compare them to each other. We at Big D Roofing offer free estimates to get you started on your roof replacement project!

Determine Materials

As we mentioned earlier, materials can affect the price of your new roof. The two main choices are going to be between a metal roof and shingles. A shingle roof will be cheaper, but a metal roof is going to last longer.

A metal roof, however, may not be necessary for your home. Do some research about what would best benefit your roof, and you can even ask a roofer what they would recommend.

Start Saving

The best practice is to have money set aside for a roof replacement. Saving slowly can make a significant difference whenever you need to start considering a roof replacement. There are different recommendations on how much you should save to start budgeting for a new roof, but saving 1% of your home’s value each month will put you in a good place.

It also may be worthwhile checking what your homeowner’s insurance covers. Having a homeowner’s insurance that covers roof replacement for disasters and accidents will save you a lot of stress if a hurricane or tree hits your roof unexpectedly.
